I poured a beer, settled onto the couch, and fired up the stream. First hour in, I kept leaning forward whenever Giancarlo showed up. Waiting for that moment… you know, where he just owns the scene with that quiet menace he does so well. But it never happened. Felt like something was off. Maybe he’s building up slowly, I thought. Still hopeful.
Second hour rolled by. More Esposito on screen. And my reaction went from hopeful to confused to downright frustrated. They had him doing… what? Giving exposition? Standing in the background looking vaguely concerned? For real? This guy chews scenery for breakfast, and here he is barely getting crumbs! Remembered feeling the same pang when they wasted Mads Mikkelsen in Dr Strange.
So Why Was It So Bad?
After the credits rolled (didn’t bother with post-credits, felt too sour), I started breaking it down:
- The Character Was Paper-Thin: Zero backstory, zero depth. Felt like they wrote “generic shady official” and just slapped Esposito’s name on it.
- Zero Leverage of His Strengths: No morally gray speeches, no simmering tension, no commanding presence cracking under pressure. Wasted opportunity for some real psychological drama.
- Screen Time ≠ Impact: Okay, he was in the movie plenty. But he had less impact than some of the stunt guys! Felt like a glorified cameo stretched thin.
Seriously, casting Esposito only to have him stand around like a nervous bank manager? It screamed waste. I wasn’t even mad, just baffled. Why hire a damn luxury sports car just to use it for grocery runs? Felt like they got dazzled by his name without having a clue what to actually do with him.
Finished the beer feeling like the movie just… forgot about him. Like that super talented actor friend you invite to a party only to leave them awkwardly by the chips and dip. Total misuse of an incredible resource. Still bugs me today. You hire Giancarlo Esposito, you better damn well use Giancarlo Esposito.
